Over the years, EPN has contributed to developing skills of pharmacy workforce in church health facilities in Sub-Saharan Africa in order to ensure delivery of sustainable and resilient pharmaceutical services. This has been achieved since the conception of the Ecumenical Scholarship Programme (ESP) which ensures that scholarships are offered to EPN member countries and selection of the beneficiaries is determined by a selection committee. The scholarship project intends to address the huge gaps of trained staff within the church health facilities, especially in the county hospital, district hospital and other hospital centres.
In March 2023, the ESP selection committee met in Nairobi review reviewing scholarship applications for the next cohort. The review looked into scholarship applications: profile of candidates, and reviewing and selection of the proposed institutions capabilities to conduct acceptable training for ESP beneficiaries. The selection committee is composed of 5 representatives of Church Health Associations, an alumnus of ESP, local representatives from Academia, MOH, Health facility and AACC (All Africa Conference of Churches).
From this meeting, 4th Cohort was then rolled out. A total of 39 scholarship were awarded to 11 member CHAs: 34 diploma and 5 masters scholarships. The beneficiaries will now enroll for diploma in pharmaceutical technology and masters public health/supply chain (3year and 2year training respectively). They are from 9 countries namely; Tanzania, Lesotho, Chad, Niger, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Democratic Republic of Congo, Central Africa Republic, Guinea. At the end of their studies, the beneficiaries will serve at their respective health facilities and CHAs.
